Summer Vacation

Working remotely is by and far one of the best things I’ve been able to do in my life. After running a game store for years, having the opportunity to NOT be self-employed, and still have time with my family, has been absolutely amazing. This is the first full summer in which I will be able to spend time with my kids, the previous years I was working 14+ hours a day running my own retail store.

With that in mind, we decided to start a diorama project!

First thing we did is grab a bunch of random minis that I had laying around!

Most of my Progress videos can be seen here!

The goal here was to create a scene involving a commissar, orks, and perhaps a few marines, but then I came across a bunch of guardsmen minis, so I think it will be more guard-focused given the commissar!

I started where almost anyone does, Pink Foam! I carved it up into a nice hilly scene. The white foam became the ground level!

The beginnings of a hill

I did some rough carving, and pinned the hill so that it was more secure. Plus it gives a way to anchor to the white foam base!

I used the marine (And a hidden Kabalite) for scale, and sculpted some larger rocks!

Continued carving, beveling one side. And cutting a craggy face into the rocks

Its ugly, but here I’ve attached it to the base, and we base-coated it brown!

My helper letting me know that he approves of the way we primed it, and added grit and sand to certain areas!

Now it was ready for paint, flock, and some vegetation. Unfortunately my lizard brain didn’t think to take pictures or videos of these steps! But here is a few shots of the paint progress!

Some small shrubs added, flock, and some paint on rocks. The whole foam was again base coated in a yellow/green

The intended Focal point of the diorama. I’ll be working on the Warboss this week!

I’m an average painter, at best, but I was pretty proud of this handsome boy! Now to get him on the hill!

We’ve also added some lovely flowers! And that’s where we are at right now! I will be adding the warboss this week, as well as sculpting a gunshot wound in it. Then we will work on adding some guardsmen and orks everywhere to fill out the scene! Once that is all done, blood splatters and trees!

This has been an amazing dive into the hobby side of the game, and one that has allowed me to connect and spend time with my children in a way I haven’t done in a long time. What a great experience, and I can’t wait to share my progress with everyone!
