Coftyran M3b Heavy Machine Gun

Well. This is my first ever article about Quar. There are a few things I want to say before we dig into this kit-bash. First off, a big thank you to Bailey over at Dank Lists Wargaming for turning me on to this game. I still remember the first time he tried to get me to look at it. I scoffed. They looked goofy. Silly little retaardvarks. I couldn’t be bothered to give it a second look.

Eventually, as my desire to separate from 40k deepened, I found myself reaching out to other games, and even daring to look at Historicals. (Maybe I’m just getting to be that age)

It was during this period that I finally decided to look at this game. I started by perusing the models. They didn’t really do much for me still, but I didn’t understand what was actually happening. It wasn’t until I cracked the rulebook for the 28mm battle game that it dawned on me. this wasn’t just some quirky cartoonish 40k rip-off. This was a labor of love, in which the creator had painstakingly devoted his life to. I read through the rules, walked through a couple of games with my exceptionally lucky guinea pigs… I mean children… And I immediately fell in love.

I definitely didn’t draw this. But they are so Gosh-Darned cute!

I’m not a “lore guy”, and I probably never will be. The mechanics are what draw me to the games I play, but the mechanics were so good that it made me really appreciate the models, which in turn made me want to learn more about the fluff. It became a downward spiral in which the more I learned the more I wanted to play, and the more I played the more I wanted to learn.

This is how I came to Quar. A game that I adore, and only wish I could play more. And with that lengthy introduction over, let’s get to the part of this article you are actually here for!

The Coftyran HMG

Let’s have a brief chat on how the rules handle it. I’ll do my best to sum it up as simply as possible.

Heavy machine guns in this game are terrifying. In the hands of a skilled commander they can lock down sections of the board like a chastity belt on a vestal virgin.

The easiest way to describe what they do is to simply say that they have a template that extends the entire length of the machine gun’s 96 inch range, and if a unit (non-tank, for the most part) gets caught in it, not only do they lose an action immediately, they are about to eat a piping hot scunyon sandwich.

I typically play Crusaders, but have some Coftyrans about for teaching people on the rare occasion that I see people that are interested, and I thought to myself, “Self. You really should fill out this company.”

So I purchsed the specialist box and decided to kitbash an HMG.

So I dug through my bits box

Gray plastic model‑kit sprue laid out on a hobby work surface, showing unassembled miniature parts alongside scattered tools and paint marks.
Some Bolt Action and other bits I had laying around

I wanted the gun to look a bit… Sillier. I wanted large front-facing shield on this pintle mounted machine gun. I could have simply mounted the gun and been done, but no. that just won’t do. So I found these lads, not really sure what they are, but they did the job.

Say hello to my booby bazooka!

I glued them with some plastic glue, once they dried I put a small bead of super glue on the back side to help keep them together.

I then mounted a piece of the Quar sprue inside of a base for the pintle/stand

Fuuuuuuck my desk is kind of gross!
Adding a paperclip to pin everything together

I’ll be honest. I don’t know where I got the actual gun from. Its been sitting in my drawer for a very long time, and it has been whispering for some time now for me to come figure something out with it. I chopped the barrel, and a few other bits and bobs off, then mounted it to the stand

It could be a 40k bit. wouldn’t surprise me!

I mounted the front shield to it, and found a suitable barrel. Probably should have done that part first, but a wise man once said, “fuck it, we ball”.

It will need primer and paint, but I really feel like this did a great job of capturing the feel of Quar, and gives it a bit of a cartoony look!

That’s my Coftyran Machine gun build! I hope you enjoy(ed) it!

Chris
