When Games Workshop first announced the Old World I was excited. Hell yeah! Some of my best memories are playing Fantasy with my friends, both before, and during, my time in the military. I even remember my post-active duty life. When I first moved back to Indiana and we would play in my Mom’s basement.
The first article got me pumped. I immediately began reminiscing about Bretonnians, and thinking about how cool it would be to field an army of knights once again. Or rebuilding my elf armies! thousands of points of both wood and high elves that were stolen when I was a younger man.
All of that nostalgia came crashing down, though. I slowly remembered how much I hated 8th edition. The introduction of premeasuring, the changes to the psychic phase, as well as other nuances that shifted how the game was played. It changed fundamentally. This change was further compounded when Fantasy was blown up to make way for Sigmar, one of the GW games that I absolutely loathe and detest.
While GW teases and ramps for the release of The Old World, I sit idly by watching. It isn’t a game I intent to invest in. At least not in the rules. GW makes gorgeous models, after all, but I don’t have to play their games. Myself, along with a small team, have been quietly working on our own rules system. Slowly I’ve been fleshing out the mechanics, and I’ve been building the armies and rules around models GW releaases. Why? Because they are (as of right now), the industry standard. There are so many 3d-printable knockoffs that if I make rules based around any GW model it will be easy for players to find a 3rd party model if they wish to use that. So I will absolutely invest in more models form GW, but not into their Old World. Instead, Bear Cavalry and Bretonnians will fight for a new banner, as they attempt to survive the world of Greyloch! Look forward to articles and videos coming soon!
