It would seem that GW is following the path of Disney, and are going to do their best to cash in on nostalgia. After blowing up the Old World so that they could create the abomination that was Age of Sigmar (I detested the first 2 editions of that game). This left oldhammer fans screaming and crying for them to bring back Fantasy, and after the moderate success of Heres Horusy (Intentional), it would make sense that GW would bring back the old world so that grognards and basement hammer players alike can enjoy the vile putrescence that was late edition Fantasy Battles.
First of all, I’m sure many of you have already heard, but James himself released an article regarding the core factions in the game, which you can read here. If you are like me, and don’t like clicking links, I’ll give a basic rundown here:
- Empire of Man (I hope they are as shitty and squishy as before, so that the players can always feel like underdogs)
- Dwarves (Can’t wait to see all the smooth brain dwarf players spam cannons)
- Bretonnians (What an interesting army this was. Really hard to handle in the hands of a skilled general)
- Wood Elves (Another fun and difficult army that could be tough to handle)
- Orcs and Goblins (they were boring in Fantasy, sure this stays the same)
- Warriors of Chaos
- Beastment
- Tomb Kings (You will get to bring 6 thousand points to a 2 thousand point game, so you can feel like your shit army is balanced)
They will have rules that come out with the old world launch. Can’t wait. Hope its all Forge World like Heresy was/is. There will be other factions, but they won’t be involved as much with the narrative of the game.
In addition, if you have Sigmar armies, don’t expect for your models to have rules, unless they are as old as time itself. I actually have a stack of old Bretonnians and dryads sitting around that will have some Old World rules, so I COULD use them. This leads me to believe either they are dusting off the old molds, or you’ll be getting a LOT of resin on the shelves. I’m not opposed to this, but it seems weird when they likely still have those plastic molds somewhere in storage, but who knows for sure.
Shameless Plug

8th Ed reimagined?
So I was a Fantasy player. I started with 40k a LONG time ago, dipped out around 4-5th edition and hopped to Fantasy. I had a TON of fun playing the games we got to play, but we never really got to get too far into it. Deployments and Army time really hampered my play group and we never got back into it after a couple of trips to Iraq. I played 6th, 7th, and 8th. And while I don’t remember a lot of any of those editions, I do remember that 8th was my least favorite. Bringing in pre-measuring was a decision made to make the game a bit more modern and accessible, which I’m not opposed to, but coupling that with drastic shifts to magic, massive units that were effectively worthless, and some horrific Hero-Hammer, I can’t say that I was a fan of where 8th was at, and its no surprised they blew it up, even if it was to create the junk that was Sigmar 1st edition.

dumbass infantryman in Iraq
I love Warhammer, despite how my tone may come across, and GW makes gorgeous models, but I think we can all agree that by and large they are pretty shit at writing rules, so my expectations are pretty low going into the Old World. Fingers Crossed.
